XYZ Affair
John Adams sent a delegation to France to negotiate on an agreement to stop the harassment of American vessels by the French. When the delegation arrived in France, three agents that were named as X,Y, and Z, confronted them. The agents demanded money as a loan form the delegates and additional bribes just so they could get the opportunity to meet with French officials. The word of this confrontation spread back to America and was called the XYZ Affair.

Convention of 1800
After the XYZ Affair, Federalists called for military action. An undeclared war then took place in the West Indies between American sailors and French vessels. It was going to turn into a full-scale war, but Adams took action to try to stop it. The president sent a team of envoys to meet with the French foreign minister to agree on a settlement. This meeting was called the Convention of 1800, and it established the Franco-American Alliance. This alliance was an agreement for America to pay for damages on French vessels and the avoidance of wars between the U.S. and France.

Alien Acts
The Alien Acts increased the requirements for citizenship and also gave the president the power to deport enemy aliens whenever there is war. This is one of the laws that Federalists created to silence the tension between the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans.
Sedition Acts
The second law passed made it illegal to criticize the president and Congress. A fine or imprisonment was issued to violators. This was called the Sedition Acts.
Compact Theory/ Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions
The Democratic Republicans fought back against the two laws that were passed. Kentucky and Virginia passed resolutions overturning the acts by invoking the "compact theory". Kentucky and Virginia were the only states to do this.
