Louisiana Purchase
Jefferson wanted to buy the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon of France so spain wouldn't try to take over the New Orleans port. This port is important to the U.S because they used it to import and export goods across the Mississippi River. Napoleon sold the entire Louisiana Territory for $15 million because he decided to use that money to try and take over Europe. The only problem was that Jefferson wanted to buy the land but he didn't want to break the constitution by purchasing land form foreign countries. As a result of the purchase the French and the Spanish were no longer a threat to the US.
Lewis & Clark
After Jefferson purchased the land he finally saw his dream of having an agricultural empire becoming true. He then wanted to find a water route that would lead to the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson organized a team to investigate the west. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark started their exploration [1804-1806] in St. Louis, Missouri and ended in Oregon. Lewis and Clark warned Jefferson of the troubles they might have while trying to settle the west because of the Native Americans already living there. However, Jeffersons plan on finding a water route to the pacific ocean wasn't found.
Barbary Pirates in Africa and War
Across the Atlantic, Britain and France were still at war. Since the US wouldn't help either, the French and British would violate the Neutrality Proclamation and seize American ships and impress them in their military and take the goods they were carrying. The pirates demanded more protection money but Jefferson refused and sent the navy instead. The navy fought for 4 years but nothing changed. Britain and France then issued their Berlin Decree and Orders in Council, these said that they had authorization to seize US ships traveling to europe or France and impress the soldiers.
Embargo Act
This act stated that the US could not engage in foreign trade. The US hoped to hurt Britain and France economically by the loss of trade with the US.
